Snow Ice Cream

When I was a child, my folks made snow ice cream every winter. Just at the right time, when the snow had freshly fallen, and the ground ascended in fluffy white mounds, my grandmother, dressed in black rubber boots, and a long coat over a fresh apron, would take her shiny metal dishpan out to the backyard to gather the fresh delight. That was many years ago and as you might imagine the recipe has long been forgotten. I believe she added white sugar, vanilla extract, and cream. Does that sound right? However it was made, we thought it was absolutely delicious.

Do you remember eating snow ice cream when you were a child and/or do you make it today? Does anyone have a delicious recipe for it? I would love to hear from you!

Snow, sugar, vanilla, but add your milk very slowly as it can become thin very easily. Oh, the memories! Even though we don't get much snow here anymore, my son remembers making it as a child and called for the recipe to make it for his kids recently!

I don't remember about snow ice cream, but I do remember drizzling warm maple syrup over fresh snow and it made a delightful candy like substance!

Donna, that is so unique! I'll definitely try it after a good snowfall.

Oh yes! Yum! My mother made it for us each winter. Tasted better than any ice cream I have eaten since. And I remember her using the precious cream that rose to the top of the milk bottle--the cream she usually saved for special occasions. She added sugar and vanilla to the mix and stirred it into the fresh, new snow.

My Grandma made it for us. I did not remember the cream but the sugar and vanilla. It was SO good. The maple syrup in the snow is wonderful too. We did often have snow so it was a real treat.

Lea, you could have made a bunch of it last year, with all that snow you had in Spokane!!

Hi Barbara...My Mother's recipe was to beat together: 2 eggs, 1/2 cup sugar, 2 tsp. vanilla and 1 cup milk. Then add CLEAN snow as much as necessary to thicken. Mother made it whenever we had snow in Clinton, TN and I often made it for my Son here in OH.
Sandra Burress Foust......remember?
