The Past Recollected

A few days ago I wrote a piece on "1962" -- the year I graduated. I was married the next year, 1963, so I thought I'd continue recalling the past since I'm "on a roll" and the last posting seemed to be popular with some of my readers.

Let's see what happened the year Jim and I were married:

1. A loaf of bread was 22 cents

2. 1st US state lottery took place in New Hampshire

3. AT&T introduced the touch tone phone

4. Beattles released "I Want To Hold Your Hand"

5. The movie Cleopatra was released

6. Tatum O'Neal was born

7. Zip codes were introduced in US

8. Marten Luther King Jr. gave his "I Have A Dream" speech

9. JFK was assassinated

10. Robert Frost died

11. Maurice Sendak published "Where The Wild Things Are"

12. Betty Friedan published "The Feminine Mystique"

***What do you remember about the year you were married?

Also in 1963, my daddy graduated high school. :)

I don't think I've told you, Barbara, you remind me of one of my most beloved aunts. While she's miles away, it's nice to get her warmth and personality from you. Hugs.

Janna- Thank you for such a big compliment!!!

Hmmm, 1984. Big big hair, punkish fashions, musical tastes in flux. At my age, the rest is pretty much a blur. :)

Angie- 1984....I was blessed to have my sixth baby at age 40. She still keeps me young. Very good year!!

Oh, I still love big hair. Just can't break the habit.

Whoa. I didn't know zip codes were introduced in 1963! I thought they'd been around long before that.

Barb Davis said...

Melissa- Yep! Some things seem to have been around forever.

I love Where the Wild Things Are!!!

And where would we be now without the touch-tone phone?

Thanks for reminiscing with us- that's fun!

Avily- My children were raised with "Where The Wild Things Are." It was definitely one of their favorites.

I remember using the old phones. It took so long to get the number dialed.

1977--We moved to VA and the rest seems like a blur as we were so busy trying to live life on our own!

We were married in 1966. Stamps were .05. Lyndon Johnson was president and declared that we would stay in the Vietnam War. Walt Disney died that year and the birth control pill was deemed safe--guess what? We did not even consider using it--we had 4 children!

Angie- In 1977 "Focus On The Family" was founded by James Dobson.

Barb Davis said...

Pat- The birth control pill always made me very sick, so couldn't use it.

Hi Barbara! Thank you for visiting my blog and leaving a comment. I was glad to hear you enjoyed your visit. Small world isn't it! I went to school in West Knoxville, went to college for a while in Virginia then got married in '72. A favorite memory that year is of trips to the grocery store where a full, large "paper" bagful of groceries usually cost us about $5.00. (I've always loved to cook.)The Vietnam War was headline news, and Richard Nixon was voted President Elect.

Look how far we've gone in a few short decades, from touch tone phones to wireless internet! From zip codes to email. It's mind boggling.

Barb Davis said...

Tea- Thanks so much for coming to visit!! Yes, it's a very small world.

Barb Davis said...

Joanne- Generations who are gone now, would not believe the gadgets and conveniences we have at our fingertips.

The year I was married the United States celebrated its bicentennial.

Jimmy Carter was elected president.

A gallon of gas cost 59 cents.

Marilyn- Thanks for the info!!

Wellza, I'd have to think about that one. We were married in 1990, and I do remember that a loaf of whole wheat bread was .99. So was a gallon of milk. Lots of things were .99 back then.

I enjoyed reading your memories!

Lauralee- Also, the movie "Home Alone" was released Nov. 16, 1990. It seems like just yesterday!!
