I Meant To Do My Work Today
by- Richard Le Gallienne
I meant to do my work today,
But a brown bird sang in the apple tree,
And a butterfly flitted across the field,
And all the leaves were calling me.
And the wind went sighing over the land,
And the wind went sighing over the land,
Tossing the grasses to and fro,
And a rainbow held out its shining hand--
So what could I do but laugh and go?

Becca- It's exactly how I feel today.
Beautiful poem, Barbara.
I meant to do my work today too, but too many fun, fun things just got in the way. You know what they say, got to stop and smell the roses :)
Have a Wonderful Day!
TheChicGeek- At my age, I prefer the fun things, and take all the time I need, to do as many as I can.
Love that poem. It does not take much to waylay me with special things or even the need for a nap. It reminds me of the poem Song For a Fifth Child. I just don't get stuck on stuff.
I'm so easily distracted I sometimes think I'm mentally deranged! Amazing how I can sit and write tho - for hours and hours and zone out the world. Just don't let me get up for a bathroom break...........I may not make it back!
Lea- I'll check out Song For A Fifth Child.
SuZen- When I was a young mother, I could never have the luxury of zoning out. Now that I'm retired, I take great pleasure in the art of relaxation.
Wow, I really liked that poem. It describes how I felt today too! Hope it was a great one for you!
Literary Nut- Glad you like it. Blessings.
Nice and fitting for what a lot of us feel this time of year. But, the warm weather is approaching quickly and getting me in the mood to actually do some things. I started my little container garden yesterday.
CherokeeFox- I love container gardening. I do alot of it on my patio to add life and color.
I came across your blog while searching for the words to that very poem -- and I was delighted to find that your blog speaks of serenity and peace and joy, the very things that I seek on my own blog, http://serenityathome.blogspot.com
I will visit here again!
It was a miracle I came upon this site. Years ago I found a greeting card on which the cover pictured a little girl sitting in an apple tree reading a book, and birds were sitting on the branches. Inside was the first verse of "I Meant to Do My Work..." I framed the cover along side the verse and hung it in my kitchen, as a reminder, to take the time to find a place of serenity, in my case a wooden swing on chains at the end of my garden. After the usual hectic, busy time of raising three children and working, I'm now retired and today while re-framing the card, I took note of the name of the author, got on line, and here I am. What a wonderful place to be! Thank you! Mary
