What's Your Favorite?

I've always been a reader. In fact, I've been obsessed with books all my life!! I think writers are like that. If we read, we are compelled to write and if we write, we read.

I remember reading "The Awakening" by Kate Chopin when I was in my mid-forties and how much I loved it. I connected, somehow, and it became my all-time favorite. Of course, there have been many others that have entertained and/or inspired me and I continue to buy and read several books each month.

At this moment, I'm looking at my coffee table and I see four books that I'm in the precess of finishing--each one will bring something very special to my life. Gotta go and start reading!!!

What is your favorite book of all-time? Or which book /books are you now reading?

I certainly can relate to this post! Right now I have about four books waiting to be read, and lost count of those I've finished and "plan on" writing about but don't get around to it, because I'm still reading! I was wondering if you're ever disappointed in a book? Do you give yourself permission to stop reading at some point and go on to the next?

Alice- Am I ever disappointed in a book? Absolutely. I don't have the time to waste on something that's boring or has no message, so I'll close it for good or put it away for another time. I'm always looking for something that really connects with my personality or experience or has a kennel of truth--something I can take from it and use. I expect it to take me to a place I've never been before, give me something to think about, or touch my heart.

The book that heads the list for me is The Unsettling of America written by Wendell Berry. I also like his collection of essays entitled The Gift of Good Land.

Of all time? Love a few: Jane Eyre, Dandelion Wine. I know I'll go back to them throughout my life. I just finished reading, on a more contemporary note, Alice Hoffman's Ice Queen, very good.

Marilyn- I've heard of the book, but haven't read it.

Some of the books I've ordered recently, have come from those you have suggested.

Happy reading!!

I have as many books going too:) I really can't say what my favorite book is--it changes with each new one I read. So do my authors. I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't read.

Terri- I agree. I don't know what I would do without reading and music.

I agree with your thoughts about writing and reading and their relation exactly, Barbara.

I've in recent months had three or four going at a time, though at this moment I'm only reading Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. (Saw the movie and wanted to read it!) I do have about 15 books stacked up and waiting to be read, which I love!

I don't think I can narrow it down to just one favorite, though. Too tough for me. :)

Janna- I haven't read Traveling Pants, but did see the movie. There are soooo many great books out there!!

I have always had a few books on the go at one time. In recent years I have given myself permission to stop reading one if I'm not enjoying it. When I was younger I thought that I needed to get all the way through, but now I know that there are too many good books out there to waste my time on something I'm not enjoying. I find it hard to pick a favorite book, and my answer changes all the time. Today I will say John Steinbeck's East of Eden.

Linda- East of Eden is a good one. I'll have to remember to read it again one of these days.

Some of those mentioned here were my favorites, too--Jane Eyre, East of Eden, The Grapes of Wrath, The Scarlet Letter--Frost's, North of Boston--especially the long poem, Home Burial....and Claudia Emerson,my most modern favorite poet--Pinion, Late Wife, and Pharaoh, Pharaoh are some of the best.
